Wooden Masts

I have replaced my wooden masts on my 46' Island Trader ketch and want to know if there is a market for them. I replaced them with aluminum because I am too old to keep them protected, etc. Any suggestions?

Sure there's a market -
1st things 1st - where are you?
How long are they?
Box spars?
What are the base dimensions?
How much $$ do you want?
How about condition?
Etc,etc,ect.

If the masts are deck stepped and the main 47', sell them to me. I've got rot and am having a hard time finding someone to repair my main mast.

Re: Wooden masts

We have a Classified section where you might want to list them.

Re: Wooden masts

Off topic, but was wondering if a wooden mast offers any lighting protection?

Thoughts?

Re: Wooden masts

Dry wood doesn't conduct electricity but I imagine if you get hit your mast might ignite! The mast would have to be well sealed or the moisture content would go up as would the its ability to conduct.

You asked for thoughts and that's all these are. I claim no expertise.

Not in and of itself. Interesting things can happen when lightning hits a wooden mast. Woodenboat had an article on it that described several episodes. In one, the current traveled down the mast's grounding wire(s) and exited the boat with no damage. In another, the current, coming across moisture in the mast, superheated the moisture into steam in a fraction of a second, and the mast was blown to bits by the expanding steam. So... there are different effects, depending upon the mast.
