Winch Size Numbers?

I see winches with size designation numbers on them: 32, 28, 16, etc. Is there a standard which applies across different manufacturers? Where do you find out what the numbers mean?

The numbers are usually related to the power factor of the winch, but not always accurate.

In general though higher number is more power.

With multispeed winches the number is usually the highest power (slowest speed) that the winch provides.
