Re: Where to by chainplates online?
i made my 10 1/4”x2” chainplates with 316L flatstock from ONLINEMETALS.COM
for the ten chainplates it costed me about 250$ in SS, 50$ in polishing and sanding discs, 100$ for the electropolish and many hours of my own time!!!
so 400$ vs the thousands i was being quoted.
good luck

Who online specializes in chainplates to order?
Flat polished 316SS chainplate.
1.5" x 14.5" by 1/4" but looking too upgrade to 3/8"
6 holes drilled in, and upper end rounded off.
Schaefer makes one, SCH84-91 that would work after I double check the bolt hole distances. Those are $250ish online each, I need 12.

Re: Where to by chainplates online?
As Madehn said these are fairly easy to drill and polish. I was able to find 316 stock 2"x3/8" bar stock at a local metal recycling center Alco in central California. I drilled the holes with a drill press and cobalt bits. Rounded the corners with a sabre saw and polished starting with 80 grit and going finer to 2000 grit wet and dry paper. It took a bit of time but the results are like factory made and four of them took less than a half a day. At $4/pound it was a great savings.

Garhauer is great and if you're not going diy I recommend them highly. For something as simple as bar stock polished up with some holes drilled I would definitely encourage you to do it yourself.

Well done! A question: how did you determine that the stock was indeed 316? Differentiating between the 300 series once the mill markings are gone is not a trivial task.

Re: Where to by chainplates online?
... and there is 316 and 316L ... and there is a difference. And, not all 316 is created equal. The "316" designation only really tells you the approximate percentage of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and iron. It says nothing about impurities or treatments.
Admittedly, I know very little about metallurgy.

Do you mean electro- polished, .?
My two cents...

Re: Where to by chainplates online?
These guys advertise that they make replacement chainplates for all types of boats.
They are located in Ontario, Canada, (if that is an issue...?)
https://stainlessoutfitters.com/prod...e/chainplates/
My two cents

Same experience for me but 20years ago.
I just had a local Stainless Shop waterjet and laser cut two of 1/2" thick X 3" wide X 28" long, 6 square 1/2" holes and one 1" hole, rounded end, 2 pieces of 316L for $385. I can polish them myself or I can get them electropolished for about $100 locally. I'm in Texas at the moment and used Great Western Metals. Very pleased with their work. https://greatwesternmetals.com/

Probably. Something to do with dipping in them in a vat and turning on the power.

I second the vote for Garhauer, they will make chainplates for a reasonable price and the ret of their gear is reasonably priced and rugged. Been using them for 15 years now and have never been disappointed.

Re: Where to by chainplates online?
Consider titanium chainplates from Allied Titanium located near Port Townsend in Sequim. Chris Greimes is terrific.

Re: Where to by chainplates online?
Some of the "scrap stainless" has actual marking on to identify the alloy. Not always though so the unmarked stuff is a gamble but most seems to either 304 or 316. Granted there are other less desirable alloys. So far i have only gotten good stuff.
