Trawler Ketch Rig, Need Pro Advice.

Best advice on a sail plan for this boat? Last owner allowed sails to rot away and the original architect has no notes on the sail plan.

Is it possible to build a get-home rig with this set up?

If not, how about a sail assist to save some $$?

To boom or not?

How to balance a rig?

Thank you all in advance!
by the way, don't hate me for having a stink pot, I had sailboats in the past. :-)

I'd go with a foresail and the mizzen. Easy balance. A sailmaker can help you when they measure the boat to make the sails. Think about sheeting track locations when designing the sail and boom for the foresail. Consider having both sails on a boom . That way the sails are self tacking. Your helm location is too far away to do anything else really.
Very doable I would say.
WOnt gain much probably but with wind on the beam some I suppose.

Another idea would be to use your paravanes (?)/stabilizers as a possible spinnaker poles for sailing down wind w/2 large head sails.

Re: Trawler Ketch Rig, Need Pro Advice.

You're right, you need pro advice (not me).

Small sails won't do much to either get you home or save fuel and probably the hull won't be happy with big sails. A 100% foresail and the mizzen will not be very big and to get anything out of it you'll need to put a mainsail with a boom on it.

Issues to resolve:

Where to put a boom? The high bimini (plus your head) will limit the position of the boom and size of any mainsail.

What is the underbody of the vessel? Probably there is no keel to speak of, and rudder(s) probably small. So sailing might be problematic.

I recommend getting drawings of the hull/keel/rudder plus of course the house structures and asking an experienced naval architect to design you a sail plan, then ask a sailmaker/rigger to build and install it, but don't expect it to do much or be cheap.

Your avatar says:
Boat: 32' Chriscraft Cherokee

But that doesn't seem to be the boat you are asking about. What IS the make and size of that one? That might help folks to help you.
