Re: Symmetrical Spinnaker without Pole

I tried running a spinnaker without a pole. Worked on a very small range of sailing point. Without the pole, wasn't worth the effort to raise the sail even in open ocean.

Re: Symmetrical Spinnaker without Pole

Back in about 1994, a friend of ours and his wife doublehanded from NZ through the Panama Canal, and on to a place in the US, from which the '95 BOC race was to begin. They left late, because of difficulties getting the boat ready in time. One night, out of NZ, heading for Panama, the downhaul for the pole snapped on the chute. His wife steered the boat under the spinnaker for her whole watch, to avoid waking him, and thus preserved his rest. What a feat! Well done, C_______!

Ann

Basically, in the ocean, yes, you need the pole.

Just park a catamaran under that symetrical and it will fly just fine with no pole! [emoji41]
