A point of interest about swages. I purchased a 42 foot ocean
racing boat in 1972 and re-rigged with 5/16" galvanized 1x19 wire. I went to Moody's marina
in Bursledon near
Southampton UK., and asked if they would put the swages on the ends. I think they must have been short of staff as they told me where the swage machine was and to just put them on myself. I remember it was a lengthy handle bench mounted with jaws, and I simply squeezed a
single oval on the end of each wire.
I sailed that
boat for 40 years and 60,000 ocean miles and never had a broken stay. Being galvanized I would coat the stays with boiled linseed
oil once a year.
