Spreaderless rigging, three shrouds, sequence?

Hi,

we have a fairly simple masthead rig on our cat, no spreaders, but runners.
Mainsail has a big roach and is full batten.
I am refitting new Dyneema cables.

Please have a look at the attached sketch.

I am wondering if I could reconfigure as shown in sketch 2 and move the upper shroud to the middle chain plate and the middle shroud to the aft chain plate.

This would allow us to open the sail up more when going downwind.

I am not a structural rigging specialist its a thought, gut feeling would be to use configuration 1.

Anyone have practical thoughts on this?

Thanks so much,

Franziska

Re: Spreaderless rigging, three shrouds, sequence?

If the aftmost chainplate remains in the same place, how much of a difference would attaching the lower to it, instead of the upper, actually make? From the drawing it does not look like much. Most catamarans try to work the reaching angles going downwind because it's faster than sailing deeper: enabling the boom to go further out may not improve your speed or results. Re-leading the upper shrouds so that they offer less support aft while you increase the aft load on the mast by heading off more could be a recipe for buying a new mast. The load calculations that are done by the naval architect when he designs the rigging generally determine how the shrouds and stays are set up. Before messing with them it would be a good idea to contact the builder or designer to get their blessing.

Indeed. And check fittings at top/bottom to make sure they can handle the change in angles. Definitely needs a grown-up to advise on this and agree it’s not going to make as much difference as you think.
