Spreader Bars vs Spreader Brackets / Compression Sleeves

I need to replace the OEM spreaders on my Ericson 25.

Some manufacturers sell replacement spreaders that are supported by bars, which pass through the mast. This appears to be the newer technology.

Other manufacturers sell replacement spreaders that are supported by welded brackets, which are, in turn, supported by one or more compression sleeves within the mast.

Which system (spreader bar or spreader bracket/compression sleeve) is better in terms of strength and durability?

Thanks,
Roscoe

You may be limited by the mast extrusion cross-section. Check who made your mast and go to the same manufacturer for replacement.

We have a small mast that has external, riveted crosstree attachments in SS. They do not pass thru the extrusion. They are fine.

Roscoe, I doubt either is "better". It is just that there are multiple ways to deal with the engineering needs, and whichever one allows a maker to do the job at lower cost, to use a smaller parts inventory, or less metal, or less assembly time, is going to be "right" for that particular maker at that particular time.

Re: Spreader Bars vs Spreader Brackets / Compression Sleeves

Thanks for the tips on this issue fellas. I've been working under the assumption that the new technology, i.e., the spreader bars, were better. From everything I've read, the most important design feature of a spreader must be its compressive strength. It seems that the bar (as opposed to the compression sleeve), would provide greater strength and stability, but maybe there's no advantage after all. I've done a lot of searching on the web, and I've been surprised that I've not stumbled upon any discussions about the apparent advantages or disadvantages of each set-up.

Regards,
Roscoe
