Scenes of the weird... what are these wings?

Friend took this picture at a marina in Tijuana, appears to be pretty decent sized trimaran with wing sails and... ummm... what exactly do those giant heavy things do other than provide drag? Is that supposed to turn the sails into the wind more? Never seen anything like it:

It looks like the M&M tri with HarborWing technology on it. Harbor Wing Technologies - Autonomous Unmanned Surface Vessel - AUSV

The things in the back are computer controlled and basically act like the sheets. They pivot, and force the rest of the sail to change its AOA to the wind. As I understand it the entire system is computer controlled, and operated. With little to no human intervention other than setting the course.

The system was originally designed for pilotless sailing drones for oceanic research.
