Running Backstay Setup

I need to put proper running backstays on my steel Roberts Offshore 44.
The existing arrangement uses some kind of black braided rope from the mast attachments to where it has been tied off at any convenient point.
At the moment I am contemplating using 5 or 6:1 mainsheet blocks with cleats.
So, my question is what would be the optimum or most practical running backstay arrangement?

Chris, I am running spectra through a 5:1 system and locked of in the cleat on the block. I am only applying tension to the Mizzen, so I do not need any great effort to tension the stays. Are we talking ketch, cutter??

My boat is a sloop/cutter.

What boat will be easier to sail in all conditions a Ketch or a Sloop? Can one person sail a Ketch with no help? In the marina where I take sailing classes there is always a discussion on this subject, so I would like to know what you guys think about this. Many thanks for all your help!
