Removing steering wheel

Anyone can give me some advice in how to remove this steering wheel? So far I tried unscrewing the white friction lock (white donut) with substantial amount of force. Also tried removing the two screws with the only effect of getting the white donut to freewheel. The brand of the steering system is supposed to be Whitlock, but cannot find any schematics. Any advice highly appreciated.

Re: Removing steering wheel

Good day, Miguel,

Replace set screws, tightly. Get out your largest channel lock pliers that will give you more leverage. Unscrew white nut. Undo set screws, and remove nut. On ours, there is also a key in the keyway on the shaft...remove that, and then the wheel.

Re: Removing steering wheel

Hi Ann, thank you very much for your reply. Not sure if I understood. You are saying the white nut should be unscrewed all the way, mine seems to reach a point where it stop. Should I force it?

Re: Removing steering wheel

Actually, Miguel, wait for another Bene owner. Our boat has a metal nut that holds the wheel on. It can't get hurt by forcing it. But, for your boat, I'd wait for someone with actual experience with that kind of connection. Waiting's a bore, but I wouldn't want to give you bad advice either.

Whitlock Steering is now owned by Lewmar, where you may [or may not] find old manuals.

Re: Removing steering wheel

Thank you for your help. Ann was right a little brute force to unscrew the lock. I’ll post a pic later for future reference. Could not find the schematics for this specific model.
