I have never used the folding steps and I assume they would be fine at the dock or very calm seas but if you have to go up when the boat is rolling, I would think it would be a less secure feeling without the outer strap part of regular steps to keep you from possibly slipping off. I have only had to go up once while out at sea and I think the regular steps (closed type) were a good thing. Just something to consider! ____Grant.
