Outhaul Routing

I have a Selden Mast and Boom. I was noticing that as the boom extends away from the centerline that The outhaul starts to pinch against the inner boom edge where it 3xits the boom. With all the tension this seems like a poor design.



Has anyone ever reconfigured this kind of set up?

Would a block up higher help? That should give you a straight or straighter path from the boom and more leverage with a 90° turn.

Mainsail outhaul can be installed within the boom with a multipart tackle and cleated under the boom, not going to the mast at all, and not back to the cockpit. You go to the mast to adjust the outhaul.

Otherwise lead the outhaul line farther forward, close to the gooseneck and then to a block, perhaps lashed to the mast, which is free to follow the boom as it swings. This block will turn the outhaul line straight downward to the base of the mast and then back to the cockpit. That vertical fall, along with the moveable block at the gooseneck, will reduce the change in tension on the outhaul as the boom is eased out or pulled in.

probably lead the outhaul vertically downwards from the boom...likely use the same pad eye the furling line (?) uses...then back to cockpit

any line off the boom needs to attach as close as possible to the pivot point of the boom, to avoid the sort of problem you are seeing

As Chris suggests, it does not look like the line should go through the cheek block on the mast at all. Is there a reason it doen't go from the boom directly to the block at the bast of the mast? Leading it off to the side, as it is, would make the outhaul tighter when you ease the boom out to starboard and looser when you ease it out to port. Not what you want to happen. I would re-lead the line.
