OLD MAN WIND

So, old man wind took away my front sail recently.

Is it better to buy used or new? Right now Bacon has nothing in used and Masthead in Florida has a like new used sail for 1500. A decent new one is about 2800 from Bacon. Is Masthead a good place to buy or should I wait for Bacon's to have availability of a used one. Any thoughts welcome. Michael 4109132330

Re: OLD MAN WIND

I'm not personally familiar with either sail source. But I would say this, new sails are or can be a real pleasure. So if you can afford the new one, from a source you've previously satisfied, why not do it? None of us knows how our future plays out in advance. In general, it's easy to say "like new", but it isn't new, and dacron sails are never very good very long, except for light or small boats, neither of which category your Nauticat 44 is in.

If not, then perhaps a brief sail to Florida to have a look at it, or a train or bus ride?

Re: OLD MAN WIND

Call Mike at Sail Warehouse.

https://thesailwarehouse.com/

I got my new sails for about the price of a Bacon's used sail. Who would want a used sail anyway. I'm and ex-racer though so my sails were usually no more than 3 years old when I raced. I got 10 years out of my first new main from 2012 on my old cruising boat pictured below.

They are Rolly Tasker sails. You have to do the measurements.

My new main is a Powerhead which has 2 full battens up top and 2 partials down low. 3 sets of reef points. Sail Number.

I bought the jib first. Sail and UV are both white. Jib was around $850

I'll soon be over there near you at a marina near Onancock, VA. Deep Creek Marina which is off the Pocomoke Sound almost due East of Watts Island. I'm retiring back home basically.

I almost decided on Saxis Marina which btw is $500/year slip fee but low tide may be less than 4' and it's too far from my house.

Wind Hippie Chick's New Rolly Tasker Sails so she can continue sailing RTW.

You may have to reset the video to the start.

Re: OLD MAN WIND

I just so wish that Old Man Wind would get with the modern age, use electronics like the rest of us, and take forecasts seriously, instead of just doing his own thing wherever and whenever he feels like it.

(I actually suspect that old guy gets a real deviant kick out of blowing out sails.)

Lovely lady and all, that but is she really a good endorsement, particularly as the sails were provided to her for product placement and promotion on her channel?

Re: OLD MAN WIND

I used this company for my Pearson 30 sails. Two years now and still in great condition, sailing San Francisco Bay all year.
