New Halyard Eye Splice

I’m replacing our halyard with New England Rope 12mm Endura Euro dyneema cored double braid.

I followed the Marlo Rope D2 video except I buried 70x the diameter (of the entire line not just the core)

https://youtu.be/Auew2VwPQAM

Being this is my first splice in this line I want to make sure that I buried enough.

Yes, is more than enough.

70x of just core diameter would have been enough.

But more does not hurt, so long as bury runs in sheave groove well.

Yeah, that’s a concern that I’ll check on when I go up the mast. It’s a 2:1 halyard. I put tension on the line between a couple of winches and it wasn’t that much thicker at the bury.

Re: New Halyard Eye Splice

curious - what is the boat? That is a pretty massive 2:1 halyard.

on my own 2:1 main halyard, despite being a big splicer, I actually used a knot at the masthead deadend - because it made it easier to end for end, and avoided bury stiffness in the sheave. The knot is ofc weaker than a splice, but that did not matter because the line was overstrength. It would one of the few places I would consider a knot in loaded dyneema.

I will admit the splice does have a 'proper' feel to it.

Remember that the cover is not where your strength is, it's in the core, so as long as you have enough bury in that, you are good. I often put a lock stitch in if in doubt.

Looks like a nice splice !
