Missing stays?

See the red lines in the attached image.

How critical are the missing stays?

I assume they help keep that section of the mast in column port/starboard.

But given the jib and spinnaker are attached to the masthead, are there significant forces affecting that section of the mast?

Re: Missing stays?

Single spreaders? (you should not need the intermediate if single spreaders).

Did they try to do a stays'l/inner stay? If so, those tangs are most likely for running back stays.

Yes

No evidence of that

Just strange that the fittings are there. I even came across what appears to be the cables that were there.

Oh well... less weight aloft without them.

Re: Missing stays?

A previous owner did that to my boat. Story I heard was that the thin wall mast used on the boat could sag a little and was a detriment to racing performance. Never heard for my boat that it was a safety issue.

I always wondered if the increased drag with the extra rigging was taken into consideration.

Looked at several I38s on YW and didn't see those intermediates on any of them.

Re: Missing stays?

FWIW, our Palmer Johnson Standfast 36 had similar stays on its single spreader rig. they terminated at the spreader tip. We replaced them when we re-rigged her, but don't know if they were crucial.

Re: Missing stays?

Depending on the properties of the mast extrusion.

Is this a tapered mast or only looks so in this perspective?

Barnie has a good eye. Go get the book Principles of Yacht Design or any text you like. Get the moms on the spar. Do the math. Post for elves and trolls.
Pay a rigger to explain.
All of above or none or some.
Everybody here is an expert.
Good luck.

So... just to be clear... this was a DIFFERENT boat to the one where the mast fell off... right? [emoji846]

Seems reasonable to check.
