Main halyard stbd, jib halyard port??"?
My current boat the main sheet is on the starboard side, jib sheets on the port. It's been a while since I sold my last boat but if I recall, it was set up the same way.
So, is that a standard or do different boats put them on different sides?

And tell us your rig too!
Most will have the main sheet middle, or middle aft, and two jib sheets, port and starboard.

Doh!
Yes, Halyards.
Now I'll have to find a mod to fix my lame brained wording. Should have gone to bed and posted this in the morning.

Re: Main sheet stbd, Jib sheet port????
There is a bit of reason, and also related to some older interiors. The prevailing or right of way boat is starboard, as everyone knows. If you are in a blow and it is possible it is better to be on starboard rather than port, then you want to do that. Presuming you don't have much sail left up then the main halyard can be tended on the windward side, which makes it easier, especially with mast mounted winches, which they all used to be (or if not mast mounted then the winches were on the deck right next to the mast). Some offshore races also favor starboard tack against prevailing winds.
Look at older and some newer boats, the nav station is almost always on the port side for the same reason. Easier to sit on the leeward side rather than the windward.
So I believe that is the reason, and I think if you take a poll it is better than 80% of boats that are setup in such a manner.

Re: Main sheet stbd, Jib sheet port????
Boats are rigged however the rigger rigged them in this regard.
It's actually quite common to put all the halyards on one side so that a single winch can be used to hoist and tension them, and some boats only come with a single cabin-top winch.
The stock configuration of my boat puts all halyards and sheets coming off the mast on the port side. The opposite is only used for optional roller-furling controls sheets and secondary jib halyards, along with an optional winch.

Main halyard is at the mast, starboard side, while (from inboard) the vang, three reefing pennants, one genoa halyard, and one pole downhaul are led back to the cockpit on the starboard side.
Port side from left to right is another pole downhaul, spinaker halyard, another genoa halyard and the storm jib halyard.

It's just for conformity, so sailors new to the boat don't have to sort it out perhaps in the black dark. There's no rule says you have to do it any particular way. It's the skippers' responsibility to show new crew " the ropes ".

There's no standard for line routing.
Jib sheets are usually port and starboard.
Are you referring to your halyards?

Re: Main sheet stbd, Jib sheet port????
I'm thankful that my main halyard is on the same side of the main boom as the reefing cleats (stbd). Jib halyard is to port.

Right has more letters than left.
Starboard has more letters than port.
Green vs. red.
Main vs. jib.
Etc.

Re: Main sheet stbd, Jib sheet port????
I used the halyard on the port side to raise and lower the main (at the mast). The jib halyard, I used the starboard one, is always cleated off since the jib is always up. (roller furling)
I have my 16'6" kayak which is my dinghy on the starboard side (of my 27' boat) so this is why I used the port halyard for the main.
The reefing line is on the starboard side of the boom............

Re: Main sheet stbd, Jib sheet port????
Believe it was tradition in placement of the halyards. EVERY boat I owned or was on had the Main Halyard on the Stbd side and headsail halyards to port. After a 20 year hiatus from sailing noticed there no longer seemed to be that hard and fast convention. First noticed it on a multi hull. Maybe it's a training wheel boater thing flaunting convention. Confusing for us sailors who grew up with the Stbd Main Halyard location expected. Even a bit dangerous as the wierd halyard location hit home when the skipper needed me to reef the main and I tried to drop the jib instead in a sudden big increase in wind velocity.

Re: Main halyard stbd, jib halyard port??"?
IIRC, the French had a penchant for putting the main halyard to port. No idea why.

Yes halyards. Think I posted the question too late and night and lost connection between my brain and typing fingers.
