Re: lo-tech idea - Mast climbing?

I have used a commercial version of these on wooden telegraph poles. If you can build a pair with rubberised bars, it should be possible.

Personally I use a low-tech system also. A stretched halyard to climb on, a bosuns chair and two lines with Prusik hitches. One to the chair, one to the feet.mIf you already own a bosuns chair, then the only cost will be for 12´of rope.

"It's Not Stupid if it Works"

The video wouldn't come up for me but statement above did. As an old commercial electrician for 25 years. ...uh, yeah sure.

Re: lo-tech idea - Mast climbing?

Made my day.
Some rubber around those climbers to keep from marring your mast, a little hook so it goes more than 50 % around the mast, assume climber would be shaped for an ovoid mast, better foot attachment so you can swing out around standing rigging.
Unfortunately won’t work with mast track / boom furler system otherwise i’d be a customer.

ummmmmmm, No. I mean feel free to try it, but I'll be sure to be watching from a safe distance with a cell phone and a beer.

If you have low bandwidth, might just take time to load.

It's a guy climbing a pole with bent reo rods attached to crocs

yes, wondering if adaptations could be made to work

seems better to me than mounting those "steps" permanently

Ok Thanks. I still have a hand crank on the side of my computer.
But I can only imagine Crocs and rebar. It wasn't safe and was certainly one of the most dangerous jobs I ever had, but at least we used top of the line climbing gear. I climbed for six years and everyone I ever started with, except myself, had been seriously injured during that time. I figured it was my turn eventually so I found greener pastures. But working with linemen is a whole different experience, they are a whole different breed of men.

Re: lo-tech idea - Mast climbing?

And here I thought a halyard, a bosuns chair, and a friend was low tech.

Re: lo-tech idea - Mast climbing?

Just because they frequently happen in third world countries doesn't make them smart, safe, or practical. But like I said feel free to give it a go.

Re: lo-tech idea - Mast climbing?

Obviously the question is to figure out if / how can be adapted to be safe(r).
