I purchased a 1983 32’ Westerly Fulmar in 2019, the PO added a Leisurefurl (Coastal) in boom
furling system in ~2005 but kept the existing
rope vang. I like the LF, hauling and lowering takes some finesse but it’s good for single-handing. However, I’ve snapped 2 bales, the 1st in Sept ’21 and the replacement from Forespar in Aug ’22, both snapped at the
mooring not under load. Forespar insists this is happening because I don’t have a rigid Vang, they attribute it to “boom bounce”. The rigger who installed the LF (finding him was a lucky break

) said he didn’t put in a rigid vang because of the angles (low clearance between boom and
deck, see attached pic) and that regardless, the bale shouldn’t be breaking like that. Is anyone else using a LF without a rigid vang? Given that the 1st bale lasted for 15 years and the 2nd only 4 months, it’s possible that I got a defective(?) bale but Forespar says that’s impossible.
