Leading mainsheet to the helm

I have a 1986 Caliber 33 with mid-boom sheeting led to the cabin top winch and cleat next to the companionway on the starboard side. This is sufficiently forward of the helm that the helmsman can't reach the mainsheet while steering. I'm considering leading the mainsheet along the outer starboard side of the cockpit to a new winch on the cockpit coaming adjacent to the helm. Has anybody done this? I'm interested in the block selection and position. Thanks.
