As others said, probably a good idea to pull the mast. Also effective for a quick fix can be rolling the yacht over at the dock (careful with that one, and have a video camera handy) or going alongside a travel lift or bridge at the right tide to access the mast head from the bridge/structure.

get boom truck from sign company, use bosuns chair to find problem
