Is the pin (bail?) in this block removable?

I'm replacing all the running rigging on my H38.

I ran into this when I went to do the boom vang. It looks like the pin (is it called a bail?) on the block where the eye splice mates to it is permanent.

It almost looks like a rivet with one end the "factory head" and one end the "shop head" perhaps formed by pressing or screwing something down on it.

I gently tried to tap it out with a spacer and drift and got no joy.

Suggestions?

Re: Is the pin (bail?) in this block removable?

Looks like it's been peened into place permanently and the line has then been spliced directly to the becket. Should be easy enough to cut it off though (if there's space between the line and the metal) or drill it out (if there isn't) and replace it with a bolt. If you're not bothered about aesthetics just stick a nut on one side. If you are you might be able to drill out one side a touch and tap the other, or use a barrel nut.

Looks like a stainless pin through an aluminium cheek. If so don't hit it too hard otherwise you might crack the aluminium.

It's a fixed becket. Just cut the old line off and splice the new line around it exactly the way they did before.
If it ain't broke, why break it?

Re: Is the pin (bail?) in this block removable?

The replacement came with an eye already spliced. I'll cut the original line off, use a cutoff wheel to cut the original pin, and replace with either a clevis pin and cotter or split ring or temporarily a nut/bolt.

You could also use an s/s shackle with a captive pin.

Or a soft shackle or a lashing... but I don't see a problem with removing the extant pin and replacing with a bolt or clevis pin of appropriate size.

Quickest and easiest solution was a $65 harken single swivel becket block. Problem solved.

Cut the old line off, and use a fixed half-twist shackle to connect the new line with the already formed soft eye,

Thanks for the idea.

I also found out the PO had installed the vang tackle arrangement back to front. The becket block should have been at the botttom and the fiddle block at the top. This caused force to be applied incorrectly to the first sheave. Reason was probably the straight shackle didn’t fit well over eye on the base of the rod kicker. Bow shackle solved it.
