How to remove pin from this shackle?

I have a new halyard with a split eye. This eye should go in the small end of this shackle.... How to remove the bar (pin) to slide in my halyard eye?
Is it removable without damaging the shackle? I hate to cut off my split eye and attach it with a bowline knot!

That bar is for strength. I dont think you can remove it and put it back. But a halyard may not need that extra strength. So pick your poison, cut the halyard or buy a different shackle. I like the ones that support the rope with more surface area than just a bar. Similar to this: But that leaves you in the same problem...

What is a split eye? Not a flemish eye I hope. The flemish eye that comes with some halyards is not meant for load (also called a reeving eye).

Why would you have a shackle in the first place. A bowline or buntline hitch has worked fine for me for 40 years and and 5 figure ocean miles.

The pin is just a roll pin. Use a proper size drift and simply drive it out. To reinstall, just drive it back in. Don't use your biggest hammer.

I don't think the bar is there for strength, but rather to keep the shackle from slipping out of the halyard eye splice when it is disconnected.

If it is a roll pin, then driving it out is a reasonable thing to do, but do inspect to be sure it isn't a solid pin with shoulders... if so, driving it out will be destructive.

The best thing is to simply cut off the end of the halyard and splice the new shackle into a new eye.

PS For those who advocate tying the halyard into the headboard of the mainsail, well, on some boats that is not practical due to the height of the stacked mainsail. Some folks, us included, use the halyard for several tasks besides hoisting the sail, and an easy, one handed attachment is a good thing.

they come out easily with the right size punch ( use an old drill bit if you can't find one) They go back equally easily . Don't they're there for strength, more to stop the spliced eye getting crooked

You could connect the two with a soft shackle.

Splicing a new eye around the shackle will cost around 2' of halyard, maybe more.

Also you could look for a new shackle with a removable pin.

We have a wire halyard so I simply added another shackle since we had plenty of room and I didn't want to reswage another eye on the wire rope.

The keyed quarter-turn locking pin is extremely sensitive to the bow width and will be either too tight or too loose to engage and lock properly. I do not believe removing and replacing that pin would be healthy for the long-term health of this shackle. That isn't an inexpensive piece of kit. Nothing with the Wichard name tends to be inexpensive I have found.

If you use a knot, look-up the various Halyard Hiches instead of a bowline. Halyard Hitches are more compact so you can pull the sail a few inches higher. These hitches tend to be hard to undo, so at the dock you would have to throw the halyard around a spreader to keep it from flogging the mast in the wind.

A line attached to a shackle will let you remove the halyard from the head board and attach it somewhere away from the mast like a lifeline or handrail.

I have heard that an anchor bend works well on a halyard and will not jam tight, but have never tried it. It is a nice and compact hitch too.

My wife is barely able to reach and clip on the quick shackle to the headboard if she stands on her tippy toes and pulls down on the headboard with one hand to get to the cringle on top. Tying the halyard on would be too much of a reach for both hands. As clumsy as she can be sometimes I'm paranoid she's going to lose the halyard as it is.

This is a halyard knot recommended by Selden. Works a treat and if chafed (from ragging against the mast), cut off 10in. or so and tie a new one.

the easiest solution is to take some dyneema cord and lash your halyard eye to that shackle. No cutting or punching required, super strong, and can be essentially nil length added (perhaps 1cm).

I have removed the inner pin holding the roller (the bar) with punching an old drill bit and lot of PB Blaster. Hope I will be able to slip my halyard eye in the top round part and repunch in place the inner pin supporting the roller.
These shackles are made of special SS steel and are expensive.
The beauty is that you can disconnect instantly the halyard from the sail head and not lose anything.

Use a cows lick. Push eye splice though shackle and pin then open the spice and feed shackle though the eye splice work it around so eye splice is now folded back on itself.
When this wears through tie a haliyard knot!
