You might try sailing an old Thames sailing barge sometime.

When swigging always keep the cork in your other hand in case you have to put the bottle down in a hurry.

Oh, you meant the other swigging.

Sail one over here and I'll happily give it a go, Probably suit the skinny waters here very well. However someone might need to explain the finer points of leeboards use and brailing and I would not want to break my nails when stowing away heavy old cotton sails again. Do they have in-mast sails these days?

Hm... Give a thot to the poor sods who took ships like Pommern and Moshulu around the Horn. 8 men and three boys to a watch! They knew what "swigging" is :-)!

Done properly swigging is surprisingly effective too. A very close friend of my wife's who is 94 now and lives in England, the friend that is, not the wife, her lifelong hubbie, sadly long dead now sailed on some of the last of the clipper ships round the horn, but she still has some of the old pictures. Personally, I prefer the ones that say Quantas with a Roo on the tail for that route.

Re: How to hoist a courtesy flag

This sailor on the Nile gave me the short "no sheet winch" lesson. You simply wrap a loop of the sheet around itself and keep it in your hand.

This works well, but causes trouble with the sandwich and the beer!
