Hood Stoway furling system

I have just purchased a 1989 Challenger 36 with Hood Stoway mainsail furler. The furler drive (lower) unit does not rotate freely. Has anyone had similar experience and if so how did you fix the problem; is it simply a lubrication issue or could it be more serious?

The only way you'll know is to break down the lower unit. It could just need cleaning. And the upper bearing may need a good cleaning, as well.

You won't know until you dig into it.

If the boat sat a long time it may just require cleaning and greasing. A part may have fractured or broke but it's not a common problem. Probably best to take it apart and go over it for just the peace of mind of knowing you know how. When you get a new boat it's good to do that with a lot of things.

be careful when you pull it apart. Lots of bits and pieces-surprisingly intricate.
