Help identifying an old roller furling system

Hello. I am hoping someone can help me identify this old jib roller furling system.

As background, the boat is 1/2 way around the world from where I am, and a local rigger said that there is no forestay in the roller furling. There is no other forward standing rigging on the boat so nothing else would be supporting the mast from the bow. I have never heard of such a thing and wondering if it is right.

The boat is a 1981 Cheoy Lee 52' motorsailer. I assume the setup is original.

Apologies about the poor quality of the photos - they are screen grabs from a cell phone zoom call.

Can anyone help me identify this roller furling, and if so have any background on it? Any comments about a forward roller furling without a forestay in it?

Thanks!

Thanks! Much appreciated!

Never heard of them until now, and the solid rod design is a new one for me. Always something new to learn.....

A google search has references of 'bulletproof', 'outlasts the boat', etc. All music to my ears!

Re: Help identifying an old roller furling system

I don’t know about bulletproof but I will say as an in-mast furling system it’s terrible. Making plans now to pull my mast, close the slot with aluminum, and install a tides strong track.
Parts are available through rig-rite if you can get them to respond to your call. It took 6 months for me to get a new swivel from them. $1,100. If you have the old style swivel you’ll likely have to replace it. The bearings seize up on them.

Reminds me of a Streamstay . It looks modified as mine had a malleable case around reel and line — useful for untangling

Re: Help identifying an old roller furling system

Sorry to hijack this thread but I posted the same question about my furler a while ago and didn't get any replies so now that there are a few eyes on the topic I thought I'd ask again.

Can anyone identify this furler?

It is similar to the Streamstay already mentioned but not quite the same. Dual track foil. 1/4" stay diameter.

Re: Help identifying an old roller furling system

Super, thank you!

I called them this afternoon and was able to speak at length to Heider, a very nice and knowledgeable fellow. He confirmed that I am missing a couple of pieces and that I can still order replacements, and maybe even a new foil extrusion, even on a 40 year old furler. I'm impressed. I'll be following up in the spring once I can take everything apart and send some pictures.

Re: Help identifying an old roller furling system

I have the stastream for both main and jib on my Bombay PH31.
only pain so far has been having to guess at forestay tension as its a solid piece of aluminum rather than SS cable so cant put a tension gauge on it.
Also it original had wire to rope line on drum so main hangs with new line.
