Help

Your option please .
New head sail , we finding when we furl it badly creases up .
The old head sail is 17 years old and furls in without any creases .
We are worried about how long the sail cloth can take this abuse.

Re: Help

It needs a padded luff. Don't know if you ordered it that way or not, but it can be retro-fitted, and that should improve the situation.

Re: Help

Ann is correct, in the tack corner the roll is a lot more bulky due to the patching and UV cover, so above that the cloth is loosely rolled. It is quite common and the cloth is not being abused. The old sail the cloth was probably soft and stretchy so didn't show the creases as much or it had a foam luff. The foam luff makes the middle bulky like the tack corner.

All this should be explained by the person you brought the sail from.

Re: Help

What you show is about normal.

Use foam luff. It can easily be retrofitted. But the wrinkles remain. Dacron has good memory.

Adding foam strips make the second one shorter.

Cheers,

Re: Help

If you use the sail part curled it really needs a foam luff pad. Also make sure the lead is proper when you furl. A bad lead angle can make it worse. Invite your Quantum rep to help you.

Make sure your head stay is properly tensioned too.

Re: Help

Been a bit busy to reply back

The halyard is tight so no problem there .

The sheet cars are adjusted each time th sail is reef .

No I didn't order a foam luff maybe I should had , but the last boat I had I also didn't order a foam luff and we had no problem .

Which leave the back stays , which cant tighen any more ,
as we also have a inmast furling main and any bend in the mast will give us a problem there .

I not suggest the sail been cut wrong but something is .

With light winds if we let the sheet fly so there no wind in the sail ie no pressure in the sail we still have the same problem with deep creases .

I have I also send them to other sail makers in the U.K.

To be fair to quantum they said I had two options , tighen up on the back stay , which isn't a option I had already explain why .
Or have a foam luff fitted .
I have got to go back for them to take a look in sept .
Other sail makers have said every thing from take he sail back we wouldn't let it leave our loft like that , to asking for more photos as there could be more adjustments that might help also in light winds with the sail out they can see the cut of the sail .

No chance of doing that at the moment , there are 25 / 35 kts and look like staying like that for some time .

Re: Help

Foam luff is needed on all roller furling headsails. Kinda surprised the good folks at Quantum didn't explain this to you.
