Hatch Bimini

Hey guys,

New guy to sailing here. Bought a boat but the hatch doesn't have a bimini cover. The cockpit does but it does not extend. What do I research to find a cover for the hatch. I see them all the time and I have the rail to put something over it, just not the actual cover.

Re: Hatch Bimini

? not sure what you mean. You mean a Dodger? The Dodger goes over the sliding companionway hatch/entry to below deck. The Bimini covers the cockpit providing shade.

Re: Hatch Bimini

What boat? Some quite popular models may have new canvas available from suppliers who stock the canvas. But if you dont know if it's the same suppliers framework, that can be tough. The canvas for a Dodger can be quite expensive. There used to be pre fab ones available. But a local canvas guy can measure to fit your frame and give you an estimate.

Re: Hatch Bimini

Do you need it for rain or shade while at anchor or underway?

If you just want something while at anchor, you could rig up an awning or boom tent over the hatch. The boom tent extended more forward would help stop rain from coming in the hatch and allows you to keep it open for more air flow Also makes a good sun shade for the main cabin.

Re: Hatch Bimini

I made a Stamoid hatch dodger for our forehatch. Works okay. It was built around the dorade concept, to keep out rain. The stamoid is coming to the end of its lifetime, and I will possibly make another.

Some friends had one that was like a baby carriage hood, and could be folded down forward to keep out rain, or back to invite in air. People also use wind scoops to improve air circulation.

Jim and I made a reefing one. You just invent ideas and try them out. We use cheap tarp material for some of our prototypes.
