Get Down, Mast, Get Down!

So, you have a 35 - 40 foot sailboat and you want to sail into the Mediterranean and enter the canals of France, eventually exiting in the North Sea. The question is, what are you going to do with that mast?

Would you only make this trip with a motorsailer and a tabernacle on the mast? Could you even mount a tabernacle mast on a ship that long?

Has anyone done this and can you give us an idea of what technology you used to solve this problem?

Pull the mast, and store it on deck.
