Genoa sheet replacement

The genoa sheets on my CSY 44 are shot. Took the calipers to it and measures ~0.700" thick. Probably was 3/4" when new and has stretched and or worn.
My old Lewmar 48 self tailing winches claim a max size of 5/8" but this stuff has been working a long time with these winches...

So, I have a 600' spool of 5/8" 12 strand Nylon Mega Braid. I know nylon has more stretch. This has a breaking strength north of 9000 lbs. I may cut off a piece and try it to find out if stretch is an issue. But will it work on a winch? If it doesn't work I have a couple of dock lines so no big deal. Thoughts?

Re: Genoa sheet replacement

Nylon will definitely stretch. If you don't care too much about sailing performance you could do it, but after awhile you'll probably care. I'd say hold off and get the right line and use the nylon in applications that need a stretchy line. Oh, and yes it will work on a winch. Whether it will fit well in your self tailer, that I am not sure.
BTW, not a big deal but I think the breaking strength of that 5/8" megabraid sounds a tad low. I think is is over 10,000#

Re: Genoa sheet replacement

If you don’t care about sail trim, go for it.
