Furler put on in wrong orientation
We had our mast put back up by a yard and they put the furler back with the rope opening facing the wrong way. It is an older harkin, probably a mk1 or 2. Can the opening be moved easily? Does it matter that the cable has been turned 180?

Re: Furler put on in wrong orientation
I am not quite getting what went wrong.
Did they disassemble the furler?
Maybe a pic or 3 would belp discussion.

If the top of the forestay got disconnected when the mast was unstepped, the top fitting of the forestay probably just got flipped.

Re: Furler put on in wrong orientation
I did change one where the sailmaker had put the suncover on the wrong side of the jib. As I recall, it was pretty simple to change. All done at the bottom of the furler, and more work to re-lead the furling line).

Re: Furler put on in wrong orientation
The top fitting never came off and nothing regarding the furler was taken apart, but somehow the drum is 180 from where it was. Not even sure how it could happen aside from the track sections somehow rotating around the cable.

Re: Furler put on in wrong orientation
I am still not clear BUT is it possible the line is just wound around the wrong direction?
When you unfurl is the suncover to the right side or wrong side?
Guess #2…
When the reinstalled the furler they paid no attention to where the furling line exited. You should be able to tighten or loosen the stay a half turn with no problem. Or just reorient the drum on the stay. Too many years for me to recall.
But guesses, without looking.

^^ This is common. Most sailmakers put the cover on starboard, but not all, and winding the wrong way gives a funny result.
Photos?

Re: Furler put on in wrong orientation
Repaired one (likely the one in the second video) a couple of years back with the same fault. The furling line got destroyed as it scraped on the side of the cover. Pretty straight forward job, some hex screws under the furler if I remember it right and a new rope in..

Re: Furler put on in wrong orientation
How about this one, not only wound backwards but there is furling line on the drum. Pull the jib sheet and more line goes on the drum, pull the furling line and the jib and sheets wind around some more. I got a little headache trying to figure out how they could even do it.

I guess if the line ever chafes, you just cut it and pull out the reserve.

Re: Furler put on in wrong orientation
These posts are all about they did this, or look at what happened to me, etc. If the headstay was not unpinned at the crown or stem it is likely that when you replaced your furler line you wrapped it around the drum the wrong way. You will find that that if you make an effort that most systems aboard your boat are not difficult to understand and service on your own. My suggestion is that you learn more than just what line to pull as the owner of a sailboat. But if that isn't something you are comfortable doing, ask another sailor to put it righ and explain the error to the extent they are willing to do so, then offer to buy them a drink.
