End-to-end splicing braided line

Have recently installed a WindPilot wind vane. Am very, very happy with it in all respects but to make full use of its capabilities, I need to use a continuous loop of small diameter line -- running through a relatively small guide slot -- to operate a control knob.

So, does anyone know (1) how to butt-splice or end-to-end splice small diameter braided line and (2) how to do that without bulking-up the splice so much that it will just jam in the narrow guide slot?

If it makes a difference, I could use almost any sort of braided line for this purpose -- single or double braid, polyester, amsteel, whatever. I guess I could use three strand twisted cord, too, but the traditional three-strand splice would have the same problem.

You can taper an Amsteel splice enough to fit through a small hole. I am not sure you need to worry about strength but it is slipery so it needs to be siezed.

Re: End-to-end splicing braided line

I'm having a hard time finding an on-line description, but for this kind of loop I use a cover/cover splice, where the core is removed at the splice. The covers are tucked into each other and tapered. The core is removed, and tapered if you can, in the region of the cover overlap. You need to lock-stitch this splice, but it is actually fairly strong due to the Chinese Finger-Trap nature of the cover braid. The line diameter remains pretty consistent throughout the length of the splice.

You wouldn't want to use this splice for anything that required the full strength of a regular splice, but for your application it should be fine.

OK, I found a description on the Jamestown Distributors website: http://www.jamestowndistributors.com...iameter+Splice

A long splice results in minimal increase in size
