Denim for docking line abrasion?
Has anyone used denim - as in blue jeans - for preventing dock line abrasion?
I just ripped out a knee on a pretty good pair of jeans. The material is still pretty good in most areas. I was thinking of making a double-layered tube to go over the dock line to provide protection (and stop annoying squeaks) at the hawse hole.

ITs worth a try, but I never considered denim to be a very strong material. I have long preferred sections of old jacketed fire hose for chaffing slips.

Re: Denim for docking line abrasion?
The fact that the jeans failed tends to imply that their material isn't very chafe resistant.
Thus I doubt that it will serve well protecting dock lines... but will be better than nothing.
The best chafing gear seems to be made of materials like Dyneema that are slippery and highly chafe resistant themselves.

Denim is usually pre-worn out these days anyway. Stonewashed or whatever. It also will stay wet for a long time if it gets soaked, and retain salt crystals if you're at sea.
I've bought scrap heavy leather clothing and boots from charity shops to make chafe gear. Some boot leather is really quite good for that.
Actually, how about repairing the jeans with leather knee patches? I've done that, it makes boat work much more comfortable!

Why, just get a set of these and be happily. Cotton will rot, will tear, will not reduce heat/friction, will not stay in place, will hold water, not UV resistance, will be noisy. All if these you don't want. Best $13 you will ever spend on your boat.

Re: Denim for docking line abrasion?
yes, I've tried. Didn't really last through the storm of the day.
Re-purpose, reuse, good to do, but not worth it in this instance seems to me.

Fire hose - you can get short lengths on ebay. Lasts just about forever.

People pay good money for new jeans like that, why retire them, wear them in style.

If you ever tumble a motorcycle while wearing denim, you find out exactly how much chafe protection it offers on a visceral level. Might as well be tissue paper.

Nothing that I have ever used beats old fire hose.

Re: Denim for docking line abrasion?
I made dyneema lines to run from my deck cleat through hawse hole then hooked nylon dock line to these. Absolutely no squeaks and so far no wear on the dyneema

Re: Denim for docking line abrasion?
There are better uses.
Personally, I find jeans pretty useless. That said, the fabric is not very durable compared to synthetics, the weave is wrong (needs to be webbing weave), and they are already worn (the knee tore).
2" tubular webbing from the climbing store is another well-proven solution that will wear about 100 times (not exaggerating) longer.

That's what I use. It went through Irma in sxm (direct hit) and still good this year! It's cheap. They even sell it at Island Waterworld in sxm!

Second that on the fire hose. Jacket on my stuff is Kevlar. No chafe.

Re: Denim for docking line abrasion?
I use soft plastic hose off fairleads with a small tye / whipping to the rope to prevent slippage
Works very well but any hose will work it is just how long it lasts.
Keep trying David
