Buying extra Shackle PINS (they disappear, somehow)

There's always the option to buy a Thread & Pitch Gauge, so that you can measure what size pin exactly you need. And to go one step further, buy a tap & die set, so that you can make custom pins yourself. More trouble than it's worth, perhaps. But where the bleep, & how, are you guys losing these pins? I can't recall having lost one in 4+ decades of sailing.
