Boom Brake

Any system is untested and unproven until you do so but that doesn't mean that it is untested and unproven by plenty of others over the years. This is not a new system. I remember first using this preventer setup in the 70's.

We have a big boom furler and a Walder Boom Brake. We find if we winch it tight with one side fixed and one side on the winch we can control a pretty windy jibe. In light winds the boom will not come over so we have to loosen the line around the winch but in a bigger wind it will slowly come over. We thought we might have to tighten both sides with the size of our boom but have not found that to be the case with the largest brake. We haven’t really found it to be different on different tacks but have to admit we have only gybed* in heavy winds from port to starboard so it might be different going the other way.
