Approx price for new main sail

I know this is ridiculous because the variables are endless. I'm waiting on a few estimates but I am just curious what I should expect to pay for a new mainsail for a 47' mast

Re: Approx price for new main sail

Some where around 2-1/2 to 3 1/2 boat units.
I just got mine for 2 1/2 and was exceptionally happy with that.
Oh, and new mainsail is NICE!!!

Re: Approx price for new main sail

I shopped around, checked Chinese and Hong Kong imports and got a new US main for about the same price. A hair over $3000 for a 42' cutter. Did not find anything significantly cheaper.

This was several years ago. Expect for a 47 with inflation it might be in the high three, approaching four thousand range.

Re: Approx price for new main sail

By the way, that was a fully battened main with cars and the whole bit. A plain main might be a bit cheaper.

Got it from Mack Sails and very happy with the results.

Re: Approx price for new main sail

Peak Sails NA has prices right on their site without having to request a quote. At least for those few production boats I've looked at.

A new mainsail for an I36 (47' luff) is from 1300 to 1800 new depending on the material and performance of the sail.

A quick lookup for a 37' Beneteau shows a range from 1500 to 2000.

Obviously, extras are, well, extra.

Re: Approx price for new main sail

I just paid $3600 for a 300sf gaff-headed sail. This was at a small local sail loft, so someone like Mack will be better on the budget. I went local because they'd already been to my boat and taken measurements for other sails previously, and now I'll have a matching set from the same loft.

I think a basic main from Mack would have had a similar, maybe slightly higher price but I had several "extras":

- heavier cloth for cruising main
- triple reef points
- full length battens
- bat cars

For some odd reason Mack wouldn't throw all that in for free.

Re: Approx price for new main sail

Mack sails do a great job. Make their own sails in Florida, reasonable price and great service. If there is a problem they fix it, paying for shipping etc. Bought
main sail from them in 2017 and have put about 10,000 miles on it. Very satisfied customer (boat is a Tartan 41 from the 70's. )

You might check Bacon's inventory for your boat to see what they ae charging.

It would also depend on where you are in relationship to sail lofts and how you intend to use your boat/wind conditions in your area.

Depending on your boat design, you may want the loft to come out to measure, especially if there were changes to the rig or it isn't a common boat. This would ensure a better fit. If it's a common boat or can take good measurements, could possibly get away w/mail order.

If you can, try to pull the trigger on the sail purchase when there are boat shows. Many time lofts have a 20-25% "sale" associated w/boat shows.

A new main (properly fit) on a boat is like replacing an old worn out motor in a car. You can immediately tell the performance difference.

Re: Approx price for new main sail

Just commissioned an in-mast furling main from Bacon for a 47’ blue water. Extra stitching and reinforcing patches. No battens for no hassle furling. $3.4 and can’t wait!

Re: Approx price for new main sail

Without knowing where you are it is hard to give good guidance. I got a new tri-radial jib for my Tartan 33 for $4K 2 years ago and spent the same last year for a larger main (also triradial).

The difference is the jib is from North and the main is from a smaller loft here in St. Petersburg that has a great reputation. Sail Technologies | Custom Performance and Cruising Sails and Sail Repairs The BEST part is that Sail Technologies sews all their sails here in St Pete.

I should would have saved some serious money if I got the jib from them.

Re: Approx price for new main sail

If your looking for Dacron cruising sails Rolley Tasker out of national sail supply based in FL.
I bought a main and a 140% Genoa for 6300 US$ I was getting quotes from North, Quantum, and Doyle starting a 6500 just for the main.
The broker is in FL, the sails are shipped directly to you location from Phuket.
Good luck.

Ps: 3 reef lines
Fully battened

You are correct the variables are endless......sail material, weight, blue water construction, etc. Expect to pay $3000 for a 10 ounce cross cut dacron main sail based on my experience with 47' P dimension on my Hunter 386. I just purchased a heavy cursing laminate blue water construction for $5000 for my Hunter 46 with a 51.42 ft P dimension. Suggest contacting your local sail lofts to discuss your sailing conditions an design requirements for quotes.
