Antal XP52 electric winch - breaker pops - noisy whine

We have three Antal 52XP electric winches with the horizontal motor mount. They have worked really well up until this last week.

- Motor developed a louder whining sound.
- Trips breaker even under no load.
- Manual winch with handle works fine with no binding.
- The horizontal motor seems to be at a slight angle - at first I thought it was lose? But it’s been like this since install - and has always worked great!
- I pulled the drum off and disassembled the upper portion of the winch - then ran the motor - still trips the breaker and makes the loud whining sound

What gives? It’s as if there is some restriction either in the motor, or the mount.

Share thoughts.

Thank you

Check the motor for short ccts & ground faults, frayed wiring insulation, and loose or corroded connections.

Also check if the brushes need replacement. I needed to replace them in one of my winches the same model as yours when the motor would not come up to speed initially when the button was pressed. It was drawing a lot of amps but not enough to trip the breaker. The replacement brushes are available online and the motor was completely filled with carbon dust from the brush wear. Problem was resolved with the new brushes.
