All lines run into the Pilothouse

This may be a dumb question.

Does anyone know of a system to tack and trim from inside a pilothouse? I can't remember ever seeing it, but it seems like a good idea in heavy weather.

I just looked at a Fisher 37 and for all sail adjustment you have to leave the warm pilothouse and go out in the cold.

Easy enough if your prepared to drill the holes into the pilot house..

Re: All lines run into the Pilothouse

Bunches of boats, largely rigged to be single-handed, do just that. It's really just a matter of laying out the geometry to minimize friction and facilitate getting the right line to the right winch. You don't want to release the main halyard when you meant to trim the jib.

Ain't no dumb question, Brendan. You just hadn't seen it in a cockpit, so you asked.

Or use reversing electric winches to control trimming from remote locations. Not the safest things in the world - or cheapest - but it's done fairly often on big boats.

Brendan: Why?

If you want to see such a solution, look on youtube for SV-Seeker. It's a junk-rigged steel vessel and he pulled everything into the pilot-house.

Practically all the Vendée Globe racers were set up this way. Planning it all out before starting to drill the holes is key.

Except for the latest generation like the latest Hugo Boss, that wasn't really the case. The lines and the coffee-grinder weren't in the pilothouse, they were outside in the cockpit but the coachroof was pulled back to give more cover. Most Imoca 60 have a well-covered cockpit with all the lines.

Re: All lines run into the Pilothouse

My motorsailer has all the lines running back into the pilot house to an electric two speed Lewmar 44 winch. It's all a matter of planning. I see a lot of boats here arranged with most lines coming into the enclosed cockpit. The only sail I go out on deck for is the asym spinnaker.

Easily my favorite boat to lust after on the Internet for very many reasons...

Re: All lines run into the Pilothouse

Always wanted to do this, but don't know how to keep water from gushing and spraying in like a mini firehose through the access holes in heavy going. Our cockpit stays completely dry, including the floor, so I don't mind occasionally having to dress up to go outside.
Had enough of cold wet sailing in our old Cal 29 which had no dodger at all.
