3500 sq/ft spinnaker pulling power on backstays

Not an expert on rigging but someone has to make me believe that a 3500 square foot spinnaker is not going to snap off one or two backstays and topple a 90' mast or simply pitch the bow under.
The pulling power of that size spinnaker must be tremendous even in a moderate breeze.
That was the rigging setup on Great American III (Vendee Globe 2008-9).
Thanks
