I can't help with the hoses. but when you run the engine for half an hour, is that idling, or under a hard load, in gear pushing the boat fast? It makes a difference.

Without a load on the engine you're not going to make much heat, no matter how fast you run it. If you're able, run in gear at the dock and see how fast the water heats up. I'll bet it works more like you are expecting.

Re: Yanmar 3jh3e hot water

The two pictures attached are of a 4JH3E. Hopefully they help.

If your engine is raw water cooled you will not get much hot water from it and would be better to not have the heater attached. I have seen a number of raw water cooled engines clog and corrode the nipples off water heaters.

If your engine has closed loop cooling and its thermostat is not functioning properly it may not get warm enough to make your water hot either. If you do not have one already purchase or borrow a non-contact thermometer from Home Depot or somewhere similar and check it. I had a Jeep Wrangler that I thought would be nice to drive to the gym one chilly morning. Nearly froze me to death because of a bad thermostat. Nice and toasty after I replaced it

Typically, when running at idle for 5mins, you should be able to feel the hoses at the engine end of the calorifier loop begin to warm.

You may have an air bubble someplace in the engine hot water loop.

Re: Yanmar 3jh3e hot water

Captstu has a good point. Our 3 cyl Yanmar water heater parallel loop runs under the cabin sole to the water heater, and it requires vigorous flow to dislodge the air trapped in the heater coils. Even running at 3000 rpm may not be enough water pressure to dislodge the bubble. We used to disconnect the heater hoses from the thermostat and attach one to a 6' hose connected to a funnel on deck, and the other to a bucket in the bilge. This usually would burp out the bubble. I added a tee to the return line from the heater under the galley sink, and plumbed in a ball valve and short hose to place in a bucket. Running the engine above 2800 and opening the valve until the air from the heater belches into the bucket now gives hot water for the rest of the season.
