Yanmar 3GM30 saltwater cooled and hot water cylinder
Hi. I've recently bought a second hand boat an Elliott 1050, it has a Yanmar 3GM30 salt water cooled ( no freshwater heat exchanger)
My question is can a hot water cylinder with a stainless steel internal water heater coil be connected to my Yanmar that is cooled by saltwater ?
If yes, where are the in and out connections be on the engine.
Any help will be appreciated.
Cheers

Re: Yanmar 3GM30 saltwater cooled and hot water cylinder
A salt water cooled engine should not be run with a coolant temperature above 160 degrees. The salt will precipitate out at higher temperatures and block the coolant water passages. Because of the low coolant temperatures, salt water cooled engines don't produce enough heat to make a coil heated domestic hotwater tank work. Tried it on my salt water cooled Volvo MD2 and it didn't work. If you need hot water go with a propane demand type of water heater.

Thank you, I was wondering just that, so thank you confirming my thoughts regarding not enough temp from the engine saltwater cooling.
They don't allow the propane heaters to be installed inside the boat here in NZ anymore...
Cold showers are going to be it.
Thanks again for your prompt reply.

Brr, that's harsh. You might want to look into a sun shower bag. They're pretty convenient and you could add boiled water to tap water on those low sun days
Welcome to CF, too!!

the short answer is no
get yourself a propane instant but you need to be cautious wher you mount it due to compressed gas safety issues

Why is 160f not hot enough to heat water for a 104 f shower?

Good question! I doubt the heater would last long routing hot salt water thru it, but it's unknown territory I guess.
OP: Are you living aboard on the hook or at a marina? It sounds like on the hook...? How about a propane fired pass thru heater, hanging on a platform on the lifelines? With water quick disconnect fittings.... is that legal where you are if it's outside the enclosed space? They are sold for camping. This one works great $85 US. https://www.amazon.com/Eccotemp-L5-P.../dp/B000TXOJQ4

160 is max temperature, most salt water cooled diesels run lower cooling water temps. You don't want to be running at the max temp because of the damage that can occur from slight increase in temp. Know I tried it and it didn't work but does work fine on current fresh water cooled engine.

Re: Yanmar 3GM30 saltwater cooled and hot water cylinder
Thank you for the advice. I was going to use an Isotherm hot water cylinder as this had stainless steel heating tube inside the cylinder for the saltwater to go through. My guess is that the water is not going to get anywhere as hot as with using a freshwater heat exchanger but it may be luke warm water we get out.
Propane style of water heater is not an option as they are required to be mounted on the exterior. JUst using the boat for weekend cruising and extended holidays like at Christmas new year, so roll on summer for the weather to be warmer.
The other option is to convert the engine to a freshwater cooled version like the 3GM30FH. I will investigate buying the parts required second hand if they would be available. I'm told I would require the heat exchanger, fresh water pump and a new saltwater pump ( bigger volume)
Anyway thank you all for your interest and help, great website
Cheers CM

Re: Yanmar 3GM30 saltwater cooled and hot water cylinder
It will warm the water, just a bit. I think with salt water cooled you might not be able to pick up the heat from the exhaust manifold.
You might be able make warm water, but you mix cold 5 gallons of cold water with 5 gallons of really hot water to get your 104 degree. If you can only generate 105 or 110, you need a really big storage tank. With 6 Gallons of 160 degree water, we could take two showers, wash dishes and hands. Probably 25 or 30 gallons mixed. If you run your engine for 6-10 hours, and install a 30 or 40 gallon hot water heater, it might do 2 showers.
There is a reason your boat does not have a water heater.
It won't work well enough to justify it.

Thank you again, I'll put this on the back burner for now and hope the summer is a warm one.
Nice to meet you all, thank you for your helpful comments and wisdom.
