Why not these instead of a joker valve

I just found this manufacturer that makes composite thru hulls. So was looking at them to consider thu hull replacement (a non metal thru hull, can that actually be safe like these guys claim to be. Meets abyc requirements)

Anyway, poking around on the site, and came across a fitting that prevents backflow. Isn't that what a joker valve does. Now I know joker valves are pliable, and you may need that to push waste and paper thru, but if not, then this item would mean I would never have to replace a joker valve again.

Can someone comment on this? Also, not to go OT on my own thread, curious if anyone knows about these products for thru hulls as well.

Looking at the cut away diagram on the data sheet, these appear to just have a spring loaded check valve in them...thats fine for liquid, but its not gonna do so well with solid waste. Also, its going to be positioned in the hose away from the head pump assembly which means there will be more volume to hold backflow waste.

Ya you’d never have to change the joker again but you’d be changing the check valves twice as much if not more. No check valve on a black waste line IMO, just asking to foul it. If putting a check valve on a sink drain the Groco or Buck flapper versions are the most robust and easily repaired in the field with cleanout on the top, only drawback is they work with a combo of gravity and back flow so mounting options can be limited. True design composite thru hulls have a good rep.

Re: Why not these instead of a joker valve

Most people think that the only thing the joker valve does is acts as a check valve to stop backflow from returning to the toilet or odor from the tank from escaping through the toilet. But that's not a joker valve's most important function..something the True Design valves aren't designed to do. In fact, the joker valve is THE single most important replaceable part in a manual toilet.

Here’s how the discharge half of the pump works: On the upstroke of the piston, a vacuum is created in the area beneath the piston. This causes the joker valve to close tightly, and the flapper valve beneath the pump to open, allowing some of the contents of the toilet bowl to be drawn into the bottom half of the pump. Then, on the down stroke of the piston, the flapper valve is slammed shut, and the effluent is forced out of the bottom of the pump, through the joker valve, and off down the line. But when the joker valve becomes worn and/or there's a buildup of sea water minerals on it, it can no longer seal tightly on the upstroke of the piston...less vacuum is generated when you pump it. And as it becomes more worn less and less vacuum, till finally the bowl contents simply move up and down a bit, but don't go anywhere. Sometimes the flapper valve needs to be replaced too, which is why toilets should also be rebuilt at least every 5-6 years as PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.
You prob'ly won't notice the loss of efficiency at first because it's so gradual...same as we don't see that we've gotten a little older than we were yesterday when we look in the mirror each morning. But I guarantee you that if it's been two years or longer since you replaced the joker valve, you need to pump the toilet at least 50% more times to move the bowl contents to the tank or all the way out the thru-hull....IF they're getting there at all any more.

The spec sheet says for clear water use only.

Re: Why not these instead of a joker valve

I just spent the better half of a day dis-assembling, cleaning and rebuilding my hand-pump toilet today and everything peghall outlined is exactly true to word... it was obvious that a good clean to all valves, pipes and parts will improve the pump action and longetivity of your head (why in blue blazes is it called a 'head'???)... won't have to touch it again for another 12-18 months with a bit of luck.

Can't complain though as it was done stern-tied to a wharf 10 minutes from home with a newly-met neighbouring boatie doing a weekend clean up on his boat of the same size with good tunes playing and good beverage shared afterwards as a lightening storm passed over in the late afternoon

- job done. It's good to be alive.

Re: Why not these instead of a joker valve

As to the Trudesign composite fittings. We have replaced all through hull skin fittings & associated bends & ball valves with them 3 years ago. Over half of our OME valves had been jammed open when we bought the boat & other fittings were of doubtful metal.

The Trudesign are well respected & used in Oz.

(why in blue blazes is it called a 'head'???) because in the olden days before i was born there was head carved on the front of the boat for good luck, and under the head was a net you would go there to 'drop the kids of at the pool' hence 'going to the head'... your welcome people.
