What is the point of a shower sump pump?

I used to wonder this myself. I recently had a situation that explained it. I had a fuel leak to the bilge that prevented me from pumping bilge water to marina until it was fixed and the bilge rinsed with degreaser. I could tighten shaft seals to reduce water flow to bilge to a negligible amount. Because I have a shower/ laundry sump I could continue to use my shower and laundry. Also, I strongly recommend you put screens on your shower drains. Human hair really messes up bilge pumps.

I replaced my forward shower sump system years with a diaphragm pump that has worked. I removed the aft sump pump system this year and even though i had beed regularly pouring bleach water down it, it was a moldy nasty mess and i am glad for it to be gone.

Anyone who has ever cleaned their shower sump box would know why that going into the bilge is a BAD idea.
