waste thru hull

Hello All,

The sea cock attached to my waste thru hull is toast and needs to be replaced.
Easily done for the most part, not taking the boat out of the water...yet.
On close inspection to my surprise and puzzlement I see no flange nut pinching the thru hull to the hull!!
I have owned this boat for a dozen years no leakage here, no movement.
What the hell is holding this arrangement in place?
I am reluctant to start cranking on the sea cock with a pipe wrench if I'm going to bust the whole shebang off the hull.

There is no backing plate nothing just the threaded nipple of the thru hull attached to the sea cock.
Anyone's best guess here as to how to proceed?
Thanks Russ

First thing everyone will ask is to post a picture.

Re: waste thru hull

There are hull fitting fittings with mushroom head on outside of hull and threaded nipple through hull without flange with through bolts. Sounds like what you have.

Re: waste thru hull

As already speculated, you may have a through hull fitting like this:

At the base of the threaded nipple there is a low profile nut bedded in some kind of compound and then painted over. A real pia to get a wrench on in tight quarters.

The outside looks like this:

Smooth mushroom head with nothing apparent to seize onto but inside the hole are two little nubs that can be used as a counterhold when tightening the flange nut. You can just make out one of the nubs in this picture:

There are counterhold tools made to fit inside but an easy alternative is a piece of flatbar trapped and an adjustable wrench. Insert bar past nubs and hold with wrench from outside, turn whatever needs turning inside. It's a two person job.

Then again, you may have something completely different. Hard to know without a:

Re: waste thru hull

My advice form the folks at the yard I use, and my experience changing out through hulls has found the best way to disassemble the old unit is to cut it and replace. Sawzall is your friend.

Good luck

Nekton, whatever you do to bring the thru-hull into spec, replace the clear water hose in your photo with sanitation hose. Clear water hose will start to stink very soon. I can't tell what size the water hose is, but I can tell you that if it's coming out out of holding tank it should be 1.5'...if it's coming out of toilet, it will be 1" or 1.5". Cheap sanitation hose will also start to stink soon, so bite the bulllet an buy the good stuff. The best isn't the most expensive...Raritan SaniFlex is top rated, has a 10 yr warranty against odor permeation and is also so flexible it can be bent almost as a hairpin without kinking. Defnder has it for about $10/ft.

Peggy that is not a sewage line in any form that in all fact looks to me to be a 1/2 inch seawater pickup for a sink faucet rinse down for the galley. That or the pickup for a watermaker. Not sewage related at all.

Re: waste thru hull

Indeed it is a water intake line via the old heads intake, no longer needed as I now have a composting Nature's Head. It is plumbed with food grade hose into dual stage filter charcoal and ceramic filters that screen down to .3 microns, pushed/sucked via a 12v electric pump. Boating on fresh water has its advantages. The filter is also teed so that I can hook up to a dockside water source and filter before using. Project is ongoing. Right now it is just direct to the tap in the galley area. Long term it will be able to fill onboard water storage or pump direct. Old boat, old systems removed when I bought it, replacing as time and funds allow... we all know the story.

Fair comment about the through hull though and it's on my list. It is original to the boat, only ever used in fresh water, no visible corrosion, bronze and in excellent condition, new bronze valve courtesy of me, yes actually bronze not brass (except for the handle), I made sure and paid a lot for that valve to replace the ancient, leaky and scary oem gate valve, fresh water and electrically isolated so galvanic corrosion unlikely to be a problem in my lifetime, no leaks, protected area with little to no chance of being stepped on or hit. It is one of only three below waterline holes in my boat, along with raw water intake and sink drain, all the same style. I sleep ok at night but to each their own as far as risk tolerance.

But back to the OP... what's happening with your sitch?

Re: waste thru hull

The topic is "waste thru-hull" so without a clue as to where that hose originated, and having seen more clear water hose used in sanitation plumbing than you can imagine, I assumed that was a photo of sanitation discharge plumbing and thru-hull. I'm relieved to learn that I was wrong!

Way easier to use a 4" angle grinder and grind off the outside thru hull flange. A 30 second job and you have much better control than the Sawzall.

But you can't do it in the water.
