Waste Routing

I am new to cruising and just bought my first boat so I'll probably be on here a lot so thanks for your help!

My boat has a y-valve that can route waste from the head to either a holding tank or directly overboard. I would like to add an ElectraScan and I'm not sure of the best way to do it. I'm thinking of inserting it after the y-valve on the line that currently pumps directly overboard. Therefore in my new configuration, the y-valve will either direct waste into the holding tank (for future pumpout) or into the electrascan and then overboard.

My biggest concern is what would happen on a long crossing if the electrascan fails and I can't pump overboard? I guess a plumbing by-pass underway...

Anyone see any problems with this? Also, what is a safe head (bowl) cleaner for use with the electrascan and safe for the environment?

Thanks,
s/vbuckeye
