Waste Holding Tank
Well.... I bought a sailboat recently and found out that it was missing a waste holding tank. Before you ask, Yes! I'm new to sailing. No, I did not get a survey. But I bought the boat from what I thought was a reputable, trustworthy dealer in the area according to others. Anyway, the toilet drain is routed directly to the through-hull in the side. It's a 1986 O'Day 272, and it was originally plumbed for a tank. I need to know where I can find a holding tank for this boat. Any thoughts?
Also, while I'm on the subject. How big of a deal is it that the outboard motor didn't have a title?

Re: Waste Holding Tank
You can get a custom made plastic tank pretty cheap. Check your possibilities for location. Outboards don't have titles. At least I've never heard on one...

+1 on Ronco.
There must be an O'Day owners association where you might get specifics?

Re: Waste Holding Tank
Outboards are titled in Texas......Unless they're too old to title. I've got two that I don't have a title for. Don't worry about it, unless you just want to pay tax on something else.

Re: Waste Holding Tank
I bought from tank depo. But depends how much you use the boat at the marina or in no-discharge areas. If you can get away with a small one, you could make one with a section of 4" pvc. It would get you legal for under $30. Even better put that pvc holding tank vertically in the head above the waterline.
Sent from an undisclosed location on the high seas or from the lounge chair by the pool, you decide.

Come on!
If it were possible to make it 10' tall (it isn't) it would only hold 6.5 gallons.

Re: Waste Holding Tank
Sounds like you'll hafta limit it to 27' horizontal then. I could tell you the volume exactly if I could do that fancy math but I'm a crab!
Tanks aren't all that expensive but used can be had at an RV salvage. A beer keg might work. Dunno. They also come as flexible bags and fit anywhere. Also, a porta potty may be be all you need.

Re: Waste Holding Tank
Formula for volume of a cylinder.
Volume = pi times radius squared times height.
Working in feet or fractions of a foot is easier.

Re: Waste Holding Tank
+3 on Ronco. The tanks are heavy walled, they put the fittings where ever you want them and they have about 500 sizes and shapes.

Re: Waste Holding Tank
db--what you are suggesting amounts to little more than a stage prop. There is no room on most cruising boats for such. It is usually a simple matter to fit an adequate system.

Re: Waste Holding Tank
Just had a one million gallon sewage spill into the ICW in Palm Coast FL. I'm pretty sure they won't be paying a fine for that. All of the boats in Florida couldnt pump out that much sewage in a year.
