Question Type of shower pump which can cope with hair?

Is there a particular pump type which can cope with expelling human hair along with the shower water?

My wife and daughters all have long hair - beautiful when it's on their heads, but a pain when it clogs up the shower pump strainer. Currently, I find myself having to clean those strainers about twice a week. It is not a particularly arduous job, but I am prepared to invest in a different/better pump if it means I can go significantly longer between pump cleaning chores.

What type of pump should I be looking for?

Thanks!

Get yourself a whale gulper pump . Works great at moving hair overboard . My wife has lots of long hair , it's the only pump that doesn't jam up .

doesn't have to be a Whale pump, just a diaphragm type shower pump (love mine!)

Agree with diaphragm pumps as the best, went to them after impeller, you can also help using a strainer at the drain. Watch your bilge pump, as hair works down into the bilge and will stop the bilge pump, looks like a mouse wrapped around it. Last winter had three women on the boat at the same time...the hair was everywhere. OMG pumps and head. Try to get them to brush outside.

Whale Marine - Products

I put two of these on our boat to replace the old attwood shower sumps. They work exactly as the manufacturer describes. Whale Grey Water IC works well for shower drains.

The way long hair plugs up my bathroom sink at home, I suggest you keep the strainer.

It's always better to solve the problem at its origin versus finding solutions to the result:

With the Whale IC connected directly to the shower drain, I was able to toss the entire shower sump, making lots of room for a water maker.

I will vote with the others. The Whale Gulper is great.

That's the $1.98 solution.

Would a macerator pump be appropriate in this application, or is human hair too fine for it to deal with?

No, hair is unbelievably tough, it will just wrap up in a macerator. My Wife has long, thick hair and it gets everywhere.
I believe a strainer to be the only real workable solution, its what we do as IP head drains have strainers built in
I believe our diaphragm pump would clog if not.

Re: Type of shower pump which can cope with hair?

1) Assign the job of cleaning the sump and strainer to your wife and daughters.

2) Peggie Hall (HeadMistress) says a periodic injection of CP into your sump will clean that up easily.

Use a strainer.
