toilet seat side slide stopper?

Hi All, on my previous boat I had installed some nifty plastic stoppers to stop the toilet seat sliding sideways and breaking the hinges. Just broke a hinge because of vigorous wave motion while enjoying the use of the toilet.

They look like angle irons (but plastic). You screw them to the underside of the seat ring both sides towards the front so they grip the sides of the toilet bowl, thus preventing the seat moving sideways. I bought mine in Sweden more than 10 years back, possibly accessory from Jabsco? Maybe they stopped making them since that effectively prevents the sale of expensive replacement hinges ?
Anybody seen those sold in the US?
Cheers

Re: toilet seat side slide stopper?

I made some of these out of high density plastic (probably Starboard or similar - it was a scrap that I had on the boat). The basic design came from Offshore Sailing: 200 Essential Passagemaking Tips by Bill Seifert.

They work really well when healed for days at a time on a passage.

Re: toilet seat side slide stopper?

You could make something like that with King Starboard. Easy to do.

BTW, don't buy those expensive hinges or a new toilet set from a marine supplier. The last time I needed one I found them on Amazon - The whole toilet seat was less expensive than the hinge alone from Raritan. The same seat is used in RV's and campers. They are made by Bemis, a huge seat manufacturer. I have the Bemis part number aboard the boat. I'll look for it later today.

Never heard of such a thing but sounds like a great idea.
How about using a stainless or brass corner bracket?

I don't have anything to contribute to this topic, but I'm following it closely because I'm sure that I'll see posts from others looking for a less expensive alternative to replacement hinges and I'd love to be able to point them to it!

If you're in the US, Home Depot sells them:

Re: toilet seat side slide stopper?

I bought replacement seats for my Jabsco heads. I filed notches into the bumpers that contact the bowl. The bumpers are hollow inside but did not affect much. It works. The seat doesn't slide around on the bowl.

Re: toilet seat side slide stopper?

Dsanduril has the answer, for those who dont not wish to make them by themselves. The Home Depot variant seems to be the same idea as those I had. Alas, I am stuck here in Sweden due to the darn virus, but my wife is in the US and perhaps I can persuade her to visit the "Kindergarten for Men" for me.... I chose not to use the angle irons since they will eventually scratch the porslin and collect bacteria.....

Re: toilet seat side slide stopper?

Just get a good seat with metal hinges. This is even a problem with home toilets.

Around here it's known as Toys-R-Us for adults...

Re: toilet seat side slide stopper?

Sitting on a toilet seat too long encourages hemorrhoids. While enjoying a good dump is very human, try to read elsewhere than on the Throne of Ease.

Oddly enough I’m on my way to Home Depot to find some plumbing fittings - I am replacing all the piping and faucets on my boat. I’ll try to remember to stop by the toilet accessory section. I still have to figure out how to plumb the bidet attachment I bought for the head. TP in ladies private parts is offputting.

Amazon has them as well although in a pack of one set of two rather than two sets of two.

Re: toilet seat side slide stopper?

Drill some plastic (or wood) with a 1" hole saw then install the cut-outs on the toilet seat.

toilet seat side slide stopper?

I bought a seat from Home Depot that fits my PH-II.
I have the full size bowl.
The seat was a standard round front slow close model.
I measured the hinge bolt spacing and the hinge to front lip dimension.
Standard. Yay!

For the standard bowl yours looks to be a great find!
