Tankless black water treatment systems

Good afternoon.
We are currently looking at changing our black water system on our 57 ft Sailing vessel, to a tankless treatment system that will be compliant to all regulations.
Could anyone please give me some info on a system that they use/ recommend or even info of systems they would recommend staying away from.
Kind Regards
Rainy

Do a search for ElectroScan also Purasan, both by Raritan.
We like ours.

Re: Tankless black water treatment systems

There are still no discharge zones, there you cannot discharge. Are you in the US?
If you do not want a tank, only way out then is composting I guess, but you still have a urine tank?
Kind of hard to get away from a tank

Re: Tankless black water treatment systems

It's impossible, at least in US waters--to have a system that's completely tankless because there are "no discharge" zones where all toilet waste MUST be held for pumpout or discharge later in open sea beyond the "3 mile limit." However, they are few and far between in most coastal waters (except in New England and the FL Keys), so you'd be able to go with a treatment device and a much smaller tank that you'd only have to use if/when you cruise in those areas.

So I suggest you check out the two devices senormechanico recommended--the Raritan ElectroScan Raritan ElectroScan and the Raritan PuraSan Raritan PuraSan Promo Sheet. Also check out Raritan's Hold 'n' Treat system, available as a "bundle" (treatment device, tank and controls) Raritan Hold N'Treat Bundle or just the controls which can be added to any existing tank and treatment device, newly purchased or already installed holdntreat controls

If, after you've had a chance to absorb all that, you'd like to discuss in more detail than is practical in open forum, you're welcome to give me a shout via PM or email.

Re: Tankless black water treatment systems

To add to Peghall, the USCG is now pushing the 3 mile limit to closing off sewage OB valves. Some USA popular ports will actually board your boat for inspection to make sure the OB valve is closed and secured/locked.

Holding tanks are pretty easy to install and set up plumbing. Custom shaped tanks are readily available. Which are only required to be certain sizes per size class of boat. The tank and 3-way valve are the most expensive.

If you need some USCG regulation info, I can provide some links. Here's a start.... https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/search/pag...rue&ycord=2414

Re: Tankless black water treatment systems

I wanted to use a treatment system, but the trend to no discharge zones made me buy Incinolet toilets. Electric 120/240 ac. They use about 1kwh per flush. Waste drops into burn pot and becomes grey ash, no smell, no plumbing, just a plastic pipe vent. Toilet is standard height, uses a coated paper liner, and all stainless steel. Toilet stays much cleaner than standard marine toilet. No marine growth or busted macerator pumps. Usually run on inverter power.

I love my ElectroSan, my marina allows me to discharge it right there in the slip. No pump outs ever.

Here's a complete list of US no-discharge zones (NDZs) - https://www.epa.gov/vessels-marinas-...nes-ndzs-state

With an ElectroScan you can discharge overboard anywhere except these areas. Frankly, the water quality of the ElectroScan discharge exceeds that of the NDZ, so it's really a political issue.

David.

Re: Tankless black water treatment systems

I have a friend who installed a composting toilet, and he seems very happy with it. https://www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid...89320858126373
It seems very efficient, has a good capacity and the enzym treatment is said to be very efficient, and fast.

IMO MARPOL

IMO MARPOL (Annex 4 for Sewage) are the international rules and sets the minimum bar:

Quote:

"The discharge of sewage into the sea is prohibited, except when the ship has in operation an approved sewage treatment plant or when the ship is discharging comminuted and disinfected sewage using an approved system at a distance of more than three nautical miles from the nearest land. Sewage which is not comminuted or disinfected may be discharged at a distance of more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land, and the rate of discharge of untreated sewage shall be approved by the Administration (see resolution MEPC.157(55))"

MARPOL Annex 4

PS. I love the composting toilets, mainly for their lack of smell and need for repairs.
Example: Nature’s Head Composting toilet

Re: IMO MARPOL

MARPOL does not apply to recreational vessels. Each country establishes its own rules and is certainly free to adopt any of the provisions in MARPOL.
