Spectra feed pump reorientation

The Shurflo feed pump on my Spectra Cape Horn Extreme has failed and needs replacement.

The feed pump I have requires reorientation, but the instructions for doing so call for removing the two bolts at the brush end of the pump. On the new feed pumps, the two bolts have been covered up with a metal plate, preventing access to the bolts.

Presumably, this metal cover plate needs to be removed. The question is how? It seems stuck tightly.

The first photo from the instructional video shows the old style pump with the accessible bolts. The second photo shows my pump with the black cover plate obscuring the bolts.

The 24 Volt motor is a bit different than the 12 Volt motors in how they orientate. First, locate the two alignment marks. They are located where the motors mounting bracket bolts to the motor. There are two locations, one at the back brush cover plate where the brushes are and the other is on the plate you will rotate. Second remove the pump head itself. Once the pump head is off you will see the two bolts there instead going in the opposite direction. These bolt heads should be 8mm, you'll need a socket. Set your motor on its back (brush cover) so the bolts are facing up. Remove them both but DO NOT lift up or attempt to remove the plate the two bolts hold down or the brush cover the motor is now sitting on. Then carefully rotate this plate to the desired position. Then rotate the brush covers mark to orientate to the plates mark so the two bolts will line up with the female threads. When you insert the two bolts the motors magnets will pull on them making it a treat to line up the threads. The 8mm socket here with an extension will make it easier to line them up. Screw one bolt in until it lands then try the second one. I find this the easiest to make them line up. Then tighten them both down with maybe 15-20 torque pounds, don't over tighten. Remember during this whole operation do not to allow either the plate or brush cover to come out, they should only rotate. Take your time. If you have any questions or run into a problem just give me a call. Best Regards J.T. Halden 9545157077

Your Cape Horn extreme is a 24Volt system right? If not, you have the wrong motor.

Re: Spectra feed pump reorientation

Yes, it is a 24V Cape Horn.

Thanks, Tellie, your detailed answers are a great help to the forum. That advice should fix the issue.

I suspect the feed pump that failed has a stuck brush. It worked intermittently for some time. I tried checking the voltages and bypassing the pressure switch, so I ruled these out, but a tap on the top plate would fix the issue (until it eventually stopped completely).

As a follow-up question, any advice or tips on how to replace the brushes on the feed pump?

As fortune would have it, today is video making day in my shop. I was wondering what we should do next. I think this 24volt motor re-orientation is a good one to make. Thanks for the idea. PS, This forum is a great place for all to learn, but you know you should call me first.

Re: Spectra feed pump reorientation

The pump was quite easy to reorient with Tellie’s instructions.

I dismantled the old pump to see why it failed. Both brushes had worn and were now too small to make proper contact (see photo below). The pump bearing, etc., was otherwise in good condition, but it is not obvious how to replace the brushes.

Any tips ?

We just did the re-orientation video yesterday. I'll make another on changing the brushes for both the 12Volt and 24Volt motors. The commutator needs attention as well.

Many thanks. A video would be a great help.

Yes, the commutator on mine needs a clean up. I think it is just carbon buildup more than anything.

No problem. We are doing this video today for the Shurflo 24Volt motor brush change out. It will take a bit of soldering but getting them back in is pretty straight forward. Look for it early next week.
